A Trailblazer of Indian Volleyball
We, the Houston Challengers, couldn’t be more thrilled to shine a spotlight on the spectacular journey of the legendary Jimmy George—an icon who revolutionized Indian volleyball and captured the hearts of fans worldwide. Born on March 8, 1955, in the humble town of Peravoor in Kerala’s Kannur district, Jimmy elevated the sport to new heights through sheer technical brilliance and unwavering determination. He became India’s first professional volleyball player, dazzling on home turf and on international courts alike. Though his life was tragically cut short in a car accident in Italy on November 30, 1987, his legacy continues to inspire generations.
Early Beginnings and Meteoric Rise
Jimmy’s volleyball education started with his father, a talented university-level player in his own right. Showcasing his prodigious skill from an early age, Jimmy represented St. Joseph’s High School in Peravoor. At just 16, he was selected to play for Kerala in the 1971 National Championship in Jamshedpur. His time at Devagiri College in Calicut helped him truly blossom—teaming up with his brother Jose to represent Calicut University from 1970 to 1972.
Dominating University Play
Continuing his studies at St. Thomas College in Palai and then Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram, Jimmy represented Kerala University from 1973 to 1976, steering them to consecutive Inter-University Championship victories. In 1973, he captained the university squad, reinforcing his natural leadership and competitive spirit. Jimmy put his medical studies on hold in 1976 to join the Kerala Police as a Circle Inspector, eventually rising to Assistant Commandant.
Venturing Abroad
Jimmy played for Kerala at the Nationals until 1979, after which he took leave from Kerala Police to join Abu Dhabi Sports Club in the Gulf. He dazzled there until 1982, when he signed with Coletto Club in Treviso, Italy, for a season before moving to System Impiani in 1983–84.Returning briefly to India, he rejoined Kerala Police and competed in his final Nationals at Kanpur in 1985. Soon after, he was back in Italy with Arrital and, in 1987–88, signed with Eurostyle-Euroslba in Montichiari, Brescia. During this time, tragedy struck, and the volleyball world lost one of its brightest stars to a car accident.
Unrivaled Skills and Honors
While playing in the Gulf, he was named the region’s best player and was widely considered among the world’s top ten attackers during his professional stints in Italy. The Indian government awarded him the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1976, shortly after he received the C.V. Raja Award from the Kerala Government.
Proud Representation for India
Jimmy donned the Indian jersey at multiple Asian Games—Tehran in 1974, Bangkok in 1978, and Seoul in 1986—clinching a Bronze Medal at Seoul. He showcased his leadership by captaining India against visiting teams, including a touring Japanese side in 1985. In the same year, he led the squad at the International Volleyball Championship in Saudi Arabia and guided them to victory at the International Tournament in Hyderabad in 1986.
Everlasting Legacy
After his untimely passing, family and friends united to establish the Jimmy George Foundation in Peravoor and Thiruvananthapuram. The foundation proudly presents the “Jimmy George Award” each year to outstanding sportspersons from Kerala. An indoor stadium in Trivandrum bears his name, and admirers in Italy have also dedicated an indoor stadium to honor his memory in Montichiari, Brescia.4 Here at the Houston Challengers, we celebrate Jimmy George’s remarkable spirit, skill, and sportsmanship. His story serves as a beacon of inspiration—reminding athletes everywhere that passion, perseverance, and a fearless commitment to excellence can truly reshape the game.

The Kerala Volleyball League of North America (KVLNA) is a volunteer-driven sports league that has been championing the cause of volleyball among fans and players for over 35 years. It was formed in 1989 when Malayalee (Kerala-origin) volleyball enthusiasts in the U.S. began organizing interstate tournaments to fuel their passion for the sport.
Early gatherings in the 1970s and 1980s, such as a 1987 tournament in Chicago with teams from Chicago, Dallas, and New York, laid the groundwork for a formal league spanning North America.
Ever since, KVLNA has grown into a pillar of the volleyball community for Kerala diaspora, bringing together players across generations and keeping the legacy of the sport alive far from home. In the decades since its inception, KVLNA has continuously supported volleyball fans by organizing competitive events, fostering player development, and creating a vibrant community around the game.Over the past 35 years, KVLNA’s multifaceted support has left a significant mark on the volleyball community, especially within the North American Malayalee diaspora.
Through its tournaments and activities, the league has promoted a passion for the game of volleyball in places where it might otherwise have been a niche interest.It has provided a structured avenue for volleyball fans to become active participants – as players, coaches, organizers, or ardent spectators.
The continuity of the Jimmy George Memorial Tournament, in particular, has helped preserve the memory of a great volleyball icon while inspiring new players with his story and competitive spirit. KVLNA’s model of rotating tournaments across cities also means that its positive influence is geographically widespread, touching volleyball communities in Illinois, Texas, New York, Florida, California, Canada, and more
